Celebrating 20 Years by Becky Stowe
To celebrate my 20 plus years of designing and drawing he commemorative S.O.S. prints, I decided to paint my drawing table where I do all my art work. Normally it is a lot more messy than what you see on the right. I cleaned it up somewhat!
Amid my art materials, my eye glasses, and the coffee mug holding my brushes are three S.O.S. prints and two other drawings. In the first upper left corner of the drawing is the very first S.O.S. print which was published in the fall of 1987. In the center is the 1994 print which is sold out. To the right is the 1988 poster. This one is special because the sand, loafers, shells etc. is entirely made of black dots called stipple. In the easel frame, top right, is a drawing of my first Beach Memories building, circa 1989 which now house “The Sugar Shack”. And the drawing, bottom center, is my present Beach Memories building across the street from the first one.
“Swink” Laughter, the S.O.S. founder, and I collaborated on the 1987 and the 1988 S.O.S. prints. Since then, I have published the 1989 through 2007 prints myself. I can’t remember the year my art was first on the cover of the “Carefree Times”. I believe I have all the S.O.S. papers in the attic above the Pirate’s Cove, but I’m just not ready to venture up there just yet! Like most attics, it’s a little scary packed with so much stuff!
To all S.O.S.’ers, I want to thank you for your patronage and friendship over the years! I’ll never forget in 1986 when I sketched the pen and ink drawing of “The Pad”. I had prints made, but I was a little shy so Larry Crouch, Fat Harold’s door man, sold them for me for $15 each during that Fall S.O.S. I didn’t think any prints would sell so I couldn’t believe it when he called and asked me to send more because he had sold out! The selling of “The Pad” print that weekend gave me the confidence I needed to do more art work relating to the beach, S.O.S., the music, and the dance, just for you. So , to my customers, all the friends I have made, my employees, and my family, I owe it all to you! SO COME CELEBRATE WITH ME, THE BEST IS YET TO BE…
